The South Atlantic League's Columbus Catfish called its western Georgia home for five seasons from 2003 to 2008. The franchise originated as the Wilmington Waves in Wilmington, North Carolina, as one of two SAL expansion teams in 2001. The nomadic Waves only played one season on the North Carolina coast before moving to Albany, Georgia for one season in 2002. Columbus kept the "South Georgia Waves" name for one season before establishing its Catfish brand in 2004.

To visually differentiate the "southern" Columbus from the other Columbus franchise in MiLB - the International League's Clippers - the Catfish adopted both peach as a primary team color and added a hooked peach on the sides of its on-field caps. The Catfish won its only SAL title in 2007, sweeping all five postseason games against Augusta and West Virginia Power.

The franchise was sold to New Hampshire Fisher Cats' ownership in 2008, relocating to Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 2009, where it continues to play as the Hot Rods.
