The Pioneer League expanded to Butte (MT) in 1977, and the "Copper Kings" began play in the Rookie-level league the following season. Named for a legendary feud between four industrialists fighting for control of the copper mining industry in Butte the surrounding region, the Copper Kings maintained its franchise and nickname for 23 years through 2000 before relocating to Casper (WY) in 2001.

While always affiliated with MiLB, the Copper Kings' franchise was more of a co-op team rather than a developmental squad, comprised of players from several MLB teams until the Tampa Bay Devil Rays officially signed on as its MLB affiliate in 1996.

After 11 years in Casper, most recently known as the Casper Ghosts, the Copper Kings' franchise continues today as the Grand Junction (CO) Rockies.
